Domestic violence can sometimes have its roots in the financial troubles that a family is going through, it has been claimed.
Wendy Hardy, domestic abuse co-ordinator at the Hambleton and Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership (HRCSP), told The Northern Echo that everyone should be aware that violence is "never acceptable", even if it is grounded in such problems.
"With many people struggling financially this year tension is already building. Then as people spend more time together the pressure becomes too much - and can be the flashpoint for violence," said Ms Hardy.
She made her comments as the HRCSP launched a campaign aimed at cutting the number of domestic abuse cases seen over the festive season. Official statistics show that such problems often spike during the holidays, potentially leading to contact with divorce solicitors in the new year.
The Yorkshire Post labelled the project "hard-hitting" and pointed out that the number of social events over the Christmas season tends to be a factor in the number of incidents seen, since people tend to drink alcohol at such special occasions.
Hambleton and Richmondshire is home to Europe's largest army base, Catterick Garrison, with ex-servicemen in the area reportedly struggling to find employment, which may also be a related trend.
