An appeal court judge has ruled that £4.4 million is an appropriate amount for a 55-year-old divorcée to receive from her ex-partner.
Reporting for The Telegraph, Gordon Rayer explained that Anthony Arbuthnot Watkins Grubb and his ex-wife Jennifer Grubb appeared in court after the former disputed whether she should receive so much of his £12 million fortune considering most of it came from his inheritance and the money he brought in as a chartered surveyor.
They have five children aged between 15 - 30, but the question divorce solicitors may ask themselves is whether it was appropriate to award her a lump sum of £1.65 million, £75,000 per year in child maintenance and a nine-bedroom country house with 40 acres of land.
Lord Justice Thorpe upheld the previous court's decision, stressing that a wife "has to have her needs met". He added: "You could argue that the judge exceeded the ambit of discretion in giving her such a large and valuable house. But I am in no doubt at all that this was a skilful, simply-stated decision by a very experienced judge."
According to Mail Online, Mr Grubb inherited a great deal of money when his father died. Among this portfolio of assets were several farms, shares and a shooting estate.
As he exited the court, the 61-year-old remarked that "it's a funny old system", but did not hint at planning to take the case any further.
