Couples who meet online more likely to get divorced

According to research by Michigan State University, couples who get married after meeting each other on a dating website are three times as likely to get divorced when compared to husbands and wives who met their partner in a more traditional “offline” venue. The study examined the relationships of over 4,000 couples. As well as the increased divorce rates, the figures also revealed that people who found a significant other online were 28% more likely to split from their partners within the first year, were less likely to get married and generally had a poorer relationship quality than couples who found love away from their screens.

Suppressing the desire for marriage

In the UK, about a fifth of heterosexual couples, and over two thirds of homosexual couples, meet online. Commenting on the results, the author of the study, Dr Aditi Paul, said “Even though a large percentage of marriages in recent years have resulted from couples meeting online, looking for partners online may potentially suppress the desire for getting married.” He went on to note that “the breakup rates for both marital and non-marital romantic relationship were found to be higher for couples who met online that couples who met through offline venues.”

Contradictory findings

The indications of the new research by Michigan State University appear to contradict a previous study undertaken by the University of Chicago which suggested that online relationships were actually stronger. It is worth noting that the previous study was commissioned by dating website eHarmony.com, and that study’s lead author, John Cacioppo, was paid as a scientific advisor for eHarmony. The new study argues that the previous research overlooked various issues, such as the differences between married, partnered, and committed relationships.
