International Day to focus on violence against women

Violence against women is the key topic of this year's International Day, which takes place on November 25th.

Ban Ki-moon, United Nations secretary-general, said in a message reported by IEWY News that the goal is for a zero tolerance attitude to be heard all over the world, particularly among young people.

Legal teams such as Kingston solicitors are among the professionals who must deal with the aftermath of domestic violence and Mr Ban pointed out that the elimination of all forms of violence against women is vital if equality of the sexes is to be achieved.

"On this International Day, I urge governments and partners around the world to harness the energy, ideas and leadership of young people to help us to end this pandemic of violence. Only then will we have a more just, peaceful and equitable world," he said.

Mr Ban labelled it "fundamental" for girls and women to be able to live free of the fear of violence.

A major part of his campaign is centred around the UNiTE to End Violence Against Women project, which has been in operation since 2008, according to IPS News.

Aldijana Sisic, campaign manager for the initiative, explained to the website that the scheme works alongside a variety of organisations to effect change all over the world, with a particular focus on legislative amendments and data collection.
