A new report suggesting the waiting period for divorce should be extended has sparked furious debate across the globe.
The account titled 'Second Chances: A Proposal to Reduce Unnecessary Divorce' has suggested that introducing a 12-month cooling off period would dramatically reduce the divorce rate across the globe.
It claims that a lot of married couples give up on marriage too soon whilst around 40 per cent consider reconciling after having contact with divorce solicitors.
Ellie Delano, who frequently writes about divorce issues for womansday.com, claimed that the Institute of American Values report made a lot of sense.
She said: "I honestly don't think this is such a bad idea, as long as they do provide the exceptions above for people in abusive situations. Divorce shouldn't be undertaken just because you've grown apart or grown bored with each other, especially if you have children together.
"They deserve every chance they can get at an intact family. Waiting a bit and getting counselling could be good for everyone involved."
However, divorce lawyer Matthew Miller has argued that any changes to waiting periods could actually do more harm than good.
Speaking to ozarksfirst.com, he claimed that couples should be free to seek relief from unhappy marriages without being delayed by legislative interests.
