New figures have revealed a dramatic rise in over-60s getting divorced.
More than 11,500 individuals aged over 60 were granted divorce in 2009, which represents a rise of four per cent in two years. This is despite the overall divorce rate dropping by 11 per cent in the same period.
Ros Altmann, who is director general of the over-50s group Saga, claimed that the elderly are increasingly seeking divorce solicitors because they are remaining active for longer.
Speaking to The Mail Online, he explained that retirement is no longer seen as winding-down period and many elderly people now believe they have time to seek out a better home life.
He said: "This is more proof that life is really changing for the over 60-s and for many it's the start of the next phase of their lives, not the end of their life as people in the past were often led to expect.
"We are really witnessing a major social revolution, with older generations no longer behaving in the traditional manner."
The Daily Telegraph report that men are almost twice as likely to get divorced after the age of 60 than women, although this could reflect the fact that males are often the older member of a married couple.
